Current research projects

Physiotherapists at the Cigonia clinic are continuing their collaboration with the Urogynecology Research Laboratory at the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS and researcher Mélanie Morin (Université de Sherbrooke) to contribute to the development of innovative, evidence-based treatments in pelvic health.

As part of a new research project, our team is participating in a study to evaluate the efficacy of physiotherapy dry needling (PDN) in women with provoked vestibulodynia, a condition characterized notably by pain at the vaginal entrance during sexual intercourse, tampon insertion, or any other contact.

Physiotherapy dry needling is already recognized in physical therapy for treating pain and muscular dysfunction. However, applying it to the pelvic floor is still a relatively uncommon expertise. The physiotherapists at the Cigonia clinic are among the pioneers to have received specialized training in using this approach for individuals with pelvic floor dysfunctions.

This study will determine whether physiotherapy dry needling can reduce pain during intercourse, improve function, and optimize the quality of life of women living with provoked vestibulodynia.

Who can participate?

You may be eligible if you:

• Are a woman aged 18 to 45;
• Experience pain at the vaginal entrance during intercourse or upon pressure (for example, during tampon insertion or a gynecological exam);
• Meet the study’s other eligibility criteria.

Participation includes an evaluation to confirm your eligibility, followed by a treatment protocol carried out as part of the research project. Evaluations and treatments are provided free of charge to eligible participants.
