Cigonia’s expertise in sexology
Our approach to sexology aims to offer you a confidential and supportive space to explore the relational and emotional challenges you may be facing. Our sexologists and sexology professionnals, are here to guide you with compassion and expertise toward a sense of well-being that resonates with you. Together, we work toward your personal and relational growth, addressing sexual and emotional issues in a specific, inclusive, and personalized way.
All the sexology professionals at Cigonia were trained as part of the Bachelor of Sexology program at UQAM. Whether they are sexology practitioners or licensed sexologists registered with the Ordre des Sexologues du Québec, these professionals can support you within their respective areas of expertise.
Furthermore, we know it can be difficult to clearly distinguish between the services offered by a sexologist with a bachelor’s degree (who provides counseling) and those of a psychotherapist (psychotherapy). Here are some definitions and guidelines to help differentiate between these two types of support in sexology. You will be directed to the appropriate professional to meet your needs when you book an appointment.

Sexological counseling
Sexological counseling is a psychosocial support approach focused on current problems and aims to develop concrete tools for managing daily challenges in sexual, personal, and relational spheres. This service, generally short- or medium-term, is more immediate than psychotherapy. Consultations can be individual or for couples, in person or remotely. Sexologists hold a recognized bachelor’s degree in sexology and are members of the Professional Order of Sexologists of Quebec (OPSQ).
We offer support services to meet your immediate needs, allowing you to move forward without necessarily resorting to psychotherapy, depending on the specific requirements that motivate your consultation. We provide receipts for insurance purposes depending on the professional and we offer preferential rate.
The reasons for seeking consultation related to sexual and relationship health are numerous and diverse. You will find a non-exhaustive list at the bottom of this page.
Psychotherapy in sexology
Psychotherapy in sexology is often a longer and more intensive process, recommended for complex situations. It aims to understand the root causes of difficulties and thoroughly explores the factors involved in symptoms and suffering, such as trauma, family history, and relationship history. To practice psychotherapy, sexologists/psychotherapists must hold a master’s degree in clinical sexology, a permit from the Ordre professionnel des sexologues du Québec (OPSQ), and a psychotherapist permit from the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ).
Psychotherapy may require more regular sessions and it targets significant changes in the client’s cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal functioning.
The distinguishing elements of psychotherapy include:
- Its objective of providing psychological treatment for mental disorders, behavioral disturbances, or any source of psychological distress.
- Its aim of fostering significant changes in the client’s cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal functioning, or in their personality.
- Its approach, which goes beyond simply providing support for everyday difficulties.
This therapeutic approach, which aims for in-depth support to improve the client’s psychological and relational well-being, is not offered at the clinic.
